Hunts Point is a neighborhood located in the Bronx borough in New York City. It is characterized by its geographical condition of a peninsula known for having the largest food distribution market in the United States.
Recover the waterfront to take advantage of the facilities of transportaction to connect with Hunts Point’s surroundings. A canalized river allows the integration of public spaces througfh the central axis improving quality of life and environmental conditions. Transportation routes for heavy traffic will be redirected towards perimeter roads, in order to clear the residential area.
In order to erase and avoid fragmentation of uses and population, both small and large scales will be conected through different medium scale proposals, which allows the permeability for the population. In the case of the industrial buildings, their rooftops will be used through retrofill for either green public spaces or solar panels which promote the productuivity of the industry. On the other hand, the wall from the food distribution center will be partially opened to offer different activities, from local markets to green walls.
To answer to the great amount of vacant micro-spaces, these will be recovered with vertical parks and greenhouses. This will improve the productivity of public space and the environmental conditions that surround the residential areas. The re[petition of these spaces through a main axis, will guarantee a continuos relation along Hunts Point.
